| Welcome to Saint Peter's |
|
We are located just north of Route 40 (Fayette Street) on Morgantown Street (Route 51) in Uniontown about 50 miles Southeast of Pittsburgh. We extend to you and your family a warm invitation to join us in seeking to know Christ Jesus, and together, seeking to make Him known. Holy Week at St. Peter's (March 28-April 4, 2010) PALM SUNDAY
8:00am and 10:30am
Choral Eucharist at 10:30am
Palm Sunday begins with the joy of the Messiah’s entry into Jerusalem and ends with the despair of His death on the cross. All of this prepares us to enter in to the mystery of His suffering for our benefit during Holy Week.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Tuesday, 7:30pm
The devotion known as Stations of the Cross is an adaptation of a custom widely observed by pilgrims to Jerusalem. These pilgrimages began in the very early days with the first known recorded in the early 200’s and continue to this day. The Stations have varied over the years so that today there are many versions. All are based on an offering of prayer at a series of places along the path last traveled by our Lord on his walk to Golgatha. The number of Stations varies. The form we will be using has eight based directly on events recorded in the Gospels. The remaining six are based upon inferences from Gospel account or from pious legend. Since a pilgrimage to Jerusalem is difficult for most of us, pictures, or icons, were developed to assist the worshiper to visualize what was being read. Our teens will depict these scenes in tableau.
TENEBRAE
Wednesday, 7:30pm
Led by lay readers, this service provides an extended meditation upon, and a prelude to, the events in our Lord's life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection. The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for "darkness" or "shadows") has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services of the last three days of Holy Week. Like Maundy Thursday, Tenebrae is a dramatic, thought provoking service which ends in darkness. MAUNDY THURSDAY
Noon and 7:30pm (7:30pm with Choir)
Maundy Thursday recalls the dramatic last night before the crucifixion. Here we remember the Last Supper where simple bread and wine were called by Jesus his Body and his Blood. Here Jesus does the work of a humble servant in washing his disciples’ feet. And here we anticipate the awful events of the arrest and crucifixion while the signs of our Lord’s presence are removed from the altar and chancel.
GOOD FRIDAY
7:00am (no choir) and 7:30pm (with choir)
Veneration of the Cross
The observance of the Friday before Easter as a commemoration of the crucifixion can be traced back to Jerusalem in the fourth century. He cries out from the cross “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” and we are faced with the awful weight of our sins laid upon our Savior’s shoulders. In the solemnity of the Good Friday Service, we remember his death and, with penitent hearts, recommit ourselves to his service. The Liturgy of the Word is followed by the Veneration of the Cross. This is a ceremony brought home by pilgrims from Jerusalem, where, as the fourth century pilgrim Egerisi tells us, the true cross was displayed at what was believed to be the actual site of the crucifixion for the faithful to venerate.
12:00 Noon

HOLY SATURDAY
Saturday, 12:00 Noon
Holy Saturday, also called the Holy Sabbath, is an empty day, the day when Christ rested in the tomb and all creation awaited the resurrection. As has been the custom in Anglican churches since 1549, noon propers will be read and prayers offered. THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER
Saturday, 7:30pm
The first proclamation of Easter takes place at at the 7:30pm Vigil. It is a moment of great solemnity and great joy. The “news” of the resurrection spreads out from there.
EASTER SUNDAY
8:00am and 10:30am
Choral Eucharist at 10:30am
The Sunday of the Resurrection, or Easter, commemorates the pivotal moment in human history when the power of sin and death was destroyed forever. All who now trust in the mercy of God made available in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ celebrate the glorious hope of our own resurrection day.
